This image is a
close-up of a blooming bloodroot. Bloodroot is one of the first
flowers to bloom in the spring in West Virginia, but is not particularly
common in my home area. Early in April, while driving down a
highway, I noticed some blooming in a roadside ditch. I went back
later to explore the wooded hillside above the highway and found more of
these flowers than I have ever seen in one area.
